Opera Joins the AI Race: Integrates Google Gemini in Browsers

Opera has thrown its hat into the AI ring by integrating Google’s Gemini model into its desktop browser lineup, including the gaming-centric Opera GX. This move comes as other big names like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are also enhancing their browsers with AI capabilities. Opera users will now have access to Gemini via the Aria assistant, offering a more sophisticated browsing experience.

Recently, Opera introduced an AI summarization feature on Android, but the desktop-focused enhancements signal a broader commitment to leveraging AI across platforms. The Aria assistant, already a staple in Opera browsers, will serve as the gateway for Gemini. Users can expect more accurate query responses, better web searches, and a plethora of other AI-driven features to enhance their browsing journey.

What sets Opera apart is its approach to not relying solely on one AI model. The company’s LLM Composer AI engine is designed to assess the user's needs and determine the best AI model to use for each task. In addition to Gemini, this engine can tap into other models like Meta’s Llama, Vicuna, and Mixtral from Mistral AI. This flexibility ensures that users get the most accurate and contextually appropriate responses.

Beyond just AI chat capabilities, Opera is also collaborating with Google Cloud to bring impressive text-to-image generation features to its browsers. Using Google’s Imagen 2 model on Vertex AI, users can now generate images from text prompts right through the Aria assistant. Additionally, Google’s advanced text-to-audio model will enable Aria to read out responses in a conversational manner, making interactions more natural and engaging.

For those eager to try out these new features, Gemini is currently available in the Opera One Developer release version. By downloading the latest Opera 112.0.5179.0 developer update, users can access Gemini through Aria in the sidebar. This move marks a significant step for Opera as it continues to innovate and keep pace with the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
